Justicia

Story behind this painting: Sometimes we hear of very unjust cases. Cases where people with common sense can recognize the injustice from a mile away. Cases so obvious that they reveal a failure of the justice system. And yet, they keep happening. Perpetrators are set free because of their promising careers, their future prospects, or other questionable reasons. This is a failure of the very system that should, at the very least, punish when it has already failed to protect.

Even though it is difficult to think or talk about these issues, I believe we need to address them. Change can only happen if we build a community that collectively desires it.

Justicia must be blind, not judging who commits the crimes. Justicia carries the scales to decide and the sword to punish.

But in these cases, the only way to depict Justicia is as in the painting below: she is looking at both perpetrator and victim, judging them unequally, so that the outcome is distorted. She cannot use her sword properly. She cannot decide impartially. Justice is tied up and silenced. Justicia must be freed.
