In this painting, I wanted to capture the essence of freedom. Not only the freedom to dress as one chooses, but the much deeper freedom to exist without fear, without judgment, without shame.
For too long, society has tried to control women and girls by controlling their bodies, by dictating what they should wear, how they should behave, how much skin they should show or hide. But the truth is clear: studies have shown that the way a woman dresses has no impact on whether she becomes a target of violence. It is never the dress that invites harm, it is always the mindset of the perpetrator.
Shame, guilt, and victim blaming have stolen far too much freedom from far too many. Covering up will never protect someone from those who intend to harm, because the problem was never the dress. The problem is always the one who chooses to violate, to hurt, to control.
True freedom means shifting the focus away from controlling victims, and instead holding perpetrators accountable.
True freedom means allowing every human being , no matter their gender, to express themselves, to move through this world with dignity, safety, and confidence.
True freedom means living without the constant burden of fear and shame.
This painting is not only about women’s freedom, it is about the universal right of every person to live without the chains of oppression, control, and judgment. It is about reclaiming the simple, powerful right to be free.
