Light in the dark (Canvas)

1 in 5 girls and 1 in 7 boys experience a form of s*xual assault and abuse. Many more cases are not even known. These children are not seen. Too often, either the parents dont know about it, or they dont dare to accept the truth or they dont care enough about the child to change something. Therefore, it is not so easy for the children to change their situation. People say: Just tell someone. Often children tell someone, but are not believed, since they are children. Many children have to trust several people until someone helps. Or sometimes, the children dont have the courage to tell someone and are too afraid of the consequences. But why do so many adults not believe the children or why dont they want to believe? Because this topic is still avoided by society. People dont want to hear this topic. They dont want to be associated with such horrendous situations, and rather stay in their safe place, where they create their own reality. Thats why I say over and over again: "we need to talk about it. There is no shame in talking about the things happening in our world".  By talking about it and facing it, we are making it possible for children to trust us and to actually change their lifes. It is not just talking, it is potentially saving children because we are more aware of it.  Someone who does not want to talk about these things, will overlook a lot of signs and may overlook even a child who describes what is happening to them because "it is just a child making things up".  Therefore, this awareness we have, can be a little hope that some children have. They might try to say something. I want us to be that little hope, that little light, that the child is carring with her/him. Like in the painting, we are here to make the child visible and to hopefully make a change.
